Stitching Update: May - July 2010

Due to many factors mostly stemming from my migraine still being with me (started late March and here still here) I have been very quiet on my blogs and with my stitching.

The treatment for my migraine revolves around short-term medication leading to regular sleep patterns and lifestyle changes (both work and at home). As part of this, I'm getting back into my stitching and  reconnecting with the world again.  Anyway enough whinging, onto the update:

Stitching update!

In June I finished off poor Jasper in Bloom.  Jasper was a project I cross-stitched in May-July 2008 as one of my train commuter projects.  Unfortunately the back stitching was getting me down so I put him away.  I found him last month while looking for a different project, and decided to "be good" and just struggle through the back stitching.  The struggle turned out to be a mere two nights in front of the TV, and he was done.

A lesson there in building molehills into mountains and the fear is worse than the event and a few other platitudes.

I then, flushed with this success, went back to New York and finished it off completely.  The silver scroll-work was a pain to do on Aida but well it always is :)  This Vervaco kit, unlike Moscow, contained enough fibres to complete the whole project.  I've included a photo of the finish here so you can see that Vervaco uses generous fabric sizes in their kits.  If only they included evenweave or linen as an option...

In late June-early July my mum visited for a fortnight. Mum brought over all of her finishes so we took them down for a Show and Tell visit to Colours Down Under :)

While mum was here, I mentioned that I had a "Fall limited edition" range of Carrie's Threads that was released in a collaboration pack a couple of years earlier.  I hadn't given away any of the threads because they all blended well together but I hadn't found a chart that I could use them on.  Coincidentally, the next day Tracy released a new free pattern, Celtic Spiral, to those on the Inkcircles email list.  Mum and I pulled out those threads and some fabric and started stitching!

Unfortunately for the stitching, I introduced mum to World of Warcraft that night and no further stitching was done for the rest of the visit.  The day she flew home I sat and stitched the rest of this piece, all except for the last 10 stitches.  You see mum and I both chose one colour the same in our palettes and I gave the rest of the skein to mum to take home with her.  I was a) quite sure I had enough and b) given our history mum always finishes our collaborated projects months ahead of me. In this instance, I was wrong on both counts.

Mum has popped a length of the thread in the mail and when it finally arrives I will finish off this poor thing.  Or not.  I just found out that the direction of the project should have been reversed for the Southern hemisphere.  {insert expletive here}.

After that I became all enthusiastic about our private round robin group starting up again, so I pulled out the Historical Dress Sampler that went around last year. I had great plans to stitch up the rest of the grey border pieces to make life easier for placement for the others. In the next four weeks I stitched precisely 10 stitches on it.  I gave up and just sent it on as is.  I feel so ashamed that I just couldn't motivate myself enough enough to stitch on it.

After it went, I started a new project, a piece for a friend's birthday in late August.  So this is my focus piece for the next few weeks.  I'll put up a separate blog with pictures and progress on this project on the weekend.  I was going great guns until I found one row of the wording was out of alignment, so I've unpicked it.  Hopefully I can have that area restitched before Sunday.  I will once again be using the Sunday updates to help keep up my motivation.

And that's it - all my stitching over the past two months :)

Ah well that's simple. Just send Celtic Spiral to me as it's gawjus, and then stitch another one for youself..see...simple.

I adore Jasper in Bloom. So glad to see him finished.
Will comment more later after a day at Mum's...rushing to get out now.
Hope today's headache is easing.xx

Great stitching! Glad to see Jasper get finished - he is definitely sweet! Love New York too, and great colors for the Celtic Spiral. I've been in a stitching slump, so good to see someone getting stuff done!

Poor Mel! I have enough with the occasional headache and migraine, but having it constantly...

Stitching update sounds great though. New York looks fab!

You did a good bit, in spite of your problems, which is a good thing...

Wow, despite everything you've been going through, you have some great things to show for it!!! Jasper is so cute - I need to get my Purrfect Summer Day out and put in more of that aqua! And New York is wonderful - this is going to be a gorgeous collection all hanging together! As for the new Spot, your miles ahead of me on it - and I started it the day it came out! But I may try to finish it up this week or next, since the travel bag is, ummm, FULL! :)

Hope the migraine is scaling back just a bit, if the meds are working themselves out. Hope to see you around more - it's been quiet. Having you AND Claire back is a great thing!

New York looks great! Is the fabric shaded or is that just the pic?
Jasper is, as ever, absolutely adorable.
I didn't know Tracy had an e-mail list. I like that design and the colors do look good together.
I got your sampler. I think it is just such a big piece it feels daunting to you right now. I will try to work on the grey scrollwork areas. If I can stay away from the computer games.
Are you getting addicted to WoW now? And dragging your mom down with you? Julie warned you! LOL.
I am currently addicted to Grand Fantasia. It is a similar genre to WoW but completely free. There is not even a subscription option. Anime style characters, but less so in the game than on the website.

Hate backstitching but LOVE Jasper. He was SO worth getting it finished. Also great to see New York finished, Are there any more in that set?
I'd like to THANK you from the bottom of my heart for getting hubby & I sucked back into the void that is WOW. We've started brand new characters (actually, a couple of pairs) on a new server (not yours though...something horde sounding with an apostrophe in the name). My hunter hit lev 21 yesterday while hubby was in Sydney.

Hope the migraine is settling down. When does the specialist expect to see improvement? If there isn't any...what then?

Great stitching. Glad they have things straightened out for you in regards to your mugraine. They are a terrible thing. I used to get them but they stopped after I went through menopause.

Mel, glad to hear you're stitching again. LOVE New York! Your other pieces are very nice as well. I'm sure your Historial Dress Sampler will see some good progress in the RR.

Don't make suggestions when you're birthday is coming up - you'll never know when I will take you at your word :)

Ah but you have completed it before me :) That thread hasn't arrived yet :)

Migraine is going up and down - I'll try to be online more when the mograine is quiet - its too easy to become a hermit and stay a hermit these days. I have to actually bestir myself to join in conversations more.

Just the picture. Unfortunately dappled sun was the closest I could get that day, and I liked the way it came out, even though its not true to the fabric ...

Yup Julie warned me and now she and mum spend more time playing the game than I do :)

I've been wanting to go through menopause since I had my first period at age 10 or 11. I think my exact comment to my mother was "we have these monthly for HOW LONG???? And boys get nothing? So unfair! How do we stop it?"

Love that you have finished Jasper. He looks really sweet. As for the Ink Spot, I have the same dyers pack and I keep pulling those Carries threads out and using them all over the place. That said I have more than enough to mimic your Ink spot but I won't. I do have the chart but I have not decided on colours yet.

Warcrack? Not my cup of tea so I'm safe. I hate even the thought of killing things whether in cyber space or IRL. I'm having a hard enough time dealing with Battersea Dogs Home's press release about destroying healthy dogs.

Melissa Hicks said...

Rosanne, Well you could do one in the same colours, but going the other way and you can send it to me, and I'll send mine to Claire - see all problems solved :)

Do I really want to know about the Battersea Dog's Home or will I just get really angry and frustrated when I hear?

Rosanne Derrett said...

You don't - it's a case of idiot boys trying to look macho by having a 'tough' dog and then dumping them. The normal candidate is a Staffordshire Bull Terrier which my nature are complete softies but these planks have 'trained' them to act vicious. These dogs are hard to untrain and Battersea are having to destroy a lot of them because they cannot safely rehome them. I'm on my hobby horse because it is another case of wrong owner syndrome.

I have to do that when my depression is bad, like it is now. I really do become a hermit - if I didn't have Phoebe, I would almost never leave the house.
