Medical Update

Hi all,

Just a short note.  I saw the consultant neurologist today. Based on the information he already had he decided that my previous diagnosis had been correct, and I am suffering from Primary Daily Chronic Headaches.

He has however, completely changed the drug regime I am on.  That starts tonight so we play the "what side effects does Mel get on these drugs" game tomorrow :)

He wants to see me in a month's time to see if these drugs are working and already has the next thing ready to go if these don't work.

He will also re-run my MRIs etc for the growth on the pituitary gland in a couple of months time.  He said that I've been through enough tests right now - so we will concentrate on reducing/removing the migraine pain and then we will look at other issues.

I liked Dr Andrews as he explained things in a completely different manner to the Perth guys.  To be honest, both mum and I received the impression that the Perth specialists arrived at the right verdict for the wrong reasons and really should have understood what they were diagnosing more ...

I so hope that you do find the right medication, Mel! Not really glad that the diagnosis (for whatever reasons) was right, because it has me worried! Pain like that is really horrible. While you are in pain there's certainly a hell of an inflammation in your head going on and it still remains a mystery to most neurologists of how that inflammation comes about and what to do against it permanently.

Rest well after these tests!

Hugs
Mariann

I didn't really understand a lot of what he was saying (being in full migraine mode at the time) but basically he said there is a migraine centre in the brain and it sends pain signals out to all of the nerve endings. The two drugs he has put me on: one targets the migraine centre, and the other targets the nerve endings ...

I have literature to read when I can think straight (hopefully tomorrow)

I sure hope they work better than the ones you are on right now! And with little or no side effects! Am leaving for work in 20 minutes and won't be home until about 6 p.m. tonight so no computer time or stitching this week at all! Rest up and take it easy!

I'm sure if you can get the migraine under control life will be more tolerable. Glad you liked the new guy; thats half the battle. Good luck with the new regime

Well, it has to be reassuring that they are both seeing essentially the same thing, even if the original was got at the wrong way. I hope the new meds get you pain free, so you can then concentrate on the other things. Keep us informed :)

Well so far things are not going well - but that's to be epected in the middle of med changover I suppose.

Migraines are constant and as bad as usual, withdrawl headaches on top of that and spent most of yesterday afternoon not willing to stand up because the room was spinning waaay too much ... and when I did stand up I got vertigo.

Letd just say it's a good thing that I'm not living on my own right now. I actually need a carer :(

So things are worse, but hopefully this is transitory and they will start getting better again soon.

My 13 year old niece started having severe daily headaches and vomiting over the last 3 weeks, severe enough to miss school and land her in the hospital for dehydration. They elimanted all the know food triggers from her diet, and still she was getting them. Then she had an appoinment with a neurologist and he put her on Beta blockers, a type of blood pressure medication. Even though she does not have high blood pressure, he said the cause could be th blood vessels in her brain. Surprisingly, the meds have worked so far. I don't know what kind of meds you are on or have been on, but if they are not effective, you may wish to ask him about the beta blockers. Just a thought. Hope by the time I got to this message, you are feeling better.

{{{{{{{Mel}}}}}}}}}} those are gentle, quiet hugs. Maybe even air hugs so I don't actually disrupt you. Hope you're feeling better by now. Thank goodness for a doctor you like. I know how much of a difference that makes. Let Mum take care of you. We Mum's love to feel needed!!
