Diary of a Jobseeker Part 1
I think today's Dilbert is very appropriate for my first day job hunting. Yes I know I was officially laid off last Friday, but I decided to take the weekend to rest and recover.
So far I've been having a good Monday.
Slept in until 8am. Showered. Came downstairs. Checked email and read blogs for over an hour. Got cold. Went upstairs to get dressed. Remembered why I was downstairs naked (I hadn't put away the washing pile yet). Came back downstairs. Got dressed. Ate breakfast.
Ready to start the search and start contacting agencies. Need to update resume with final details too.
So time to start the grand adventure !!!
(And for those of you who read this and don't know me so well ... don't bother lamenting the fact I am blogging instead of just getting on with it. I do my things in the way it works best for me. If you don't like it - stop reading!)

Well, some things you just gotta ease into - and I think this is one of them! I will cross some stitches for you!!
Some times you just need to gently sneak up on things. Catch them unawares as it were. \;-))
Good luck :) And go with whatever system works for you!
Isn't that why we blog??
Isn't that why we blog??
Sorry all - received some "why are you blogging, why aren't you spending every waking moment finding a job" from a few friends-of-friends in the wider network over the weekend and it got me a little annoyed.
There's nothing wrong with taking a couple of days for yourself! If you're going to feel your very best and project your best self for interviews and job applications, you need to take care of yourself, too.
As for reading blogs and such.. there's no harm in that either. I don't quite think it matters all that much if you update your resume at 8am or 8pm - the important part is that you do it and are taking the steps you need to take to find another job!
Well surprisingly enough I have spent the past few hours updating and rejigging my resume.
As I was doing the same things in this job as the last, it could have been updated in just a few minutes, but I wanted to change the focus away from the technical skills and add more in about my supervisor capabilities and building corporate communication etc.
I've sent it off to my mentor to comment and stopping for lunch now.
I see nothing wrong with taking a break on the weekend, after last week, you deserve it.
Heading into town later this afternoon. Checking with mail, meeting with union, then dropping into old work to hand in keys and swipe cards and then to a session with my personal trainer before coming home.
Apart from old work - not a bad afternoon planned.
Sounds like you are having a good day today! Glad you had a good weekend, and I'll keep my fingers crossed for you!
That's just idiotic! You are not looking for a new job for the first time and I think you're highly efficient at doing it. After all it only took you two or three months while still *working*, now you have full time to do it you'll do well enough doing it your way!
I'll cross all my stitches for you until you're safely back into work, Mel!
F*ck the begrudgers. When they start paying your bills then maybe they have the right to dictate to you. Until then - why would you care what they think? The arrogance of them all.
Do what works for you Tig - look after number one and to hell with the rest.
And do these individuals think that the HR managers who might DO the hiring are just sitting in their offices on Saturday and Sunday, waiting for a call? I think takikng the weekend off is fine. So do most of the people who do the hiring, LOL.
Oh Mel - I'm sorry you are having to do this!
Me too Lyne, but there you go :)
I'm rewriting my resume completely. Changing the entire format and focus to something a bit more up to date. This is slowing down the process but I want to get it right before sending it out to the agencies.
Plan for today:
* work on resume
* lunch
* walk into town and check mail
* check out exercise DVDs
* dinner
* stitch
Happy to review the next version if you like. I've got a few meetings today, but I'll squeeze it in. Promise
Don't worry it probably wont get to you until mid afternoon at this rate :)
Do you have any ideas of places you want to submit your new resume Mel?
Yup. I've looked into six different companies. Two were library specific, ytwo were IT specific and two were wider in focus.
The two library companies have accepted my resume and I have an agency interview with one on Tuesday. The other is based in Sydney and held a phone interview with me yesterday.
Going through the online forms, I didn't have enough IT experience for the two IT specific companies.
Of the two wider ones, the first accepted my resume, probably because I name-dropped Julie and she's highly regarded in these circles. The second one I left a message for. It was the Friday before a long weekend here so I expect to hear back next Tuesday or Wednesday :)
I am finding a lot of resistance with the agencies. They still want to place me where my technical know-how is. They don't want to place me as a team leader or manager of a section where I don't have the proven track record of experience and excellence actually doing the technical work.
Hopefully we will break down that resistance at some point :)
Are the jobs something where you could start in one position and once proven move into another?
Not really the GFC (yes it is now an acronym) has a lot of places not wanting to backfill when staff leave. I'll kee[ plugging away.
Tomorrow.
Sorry to hear you were laid off.
