What can I say - I've been working on Rhiannon this week - Catherine's slot 5 in the 5 slot rotation I'm setting up for 2007 so she should have a head by late February ...

ROFL.....poor old girl's got a long wait.

Perhaps I should have said - by end of February at the latest - you never know - I might get inspired and finish her while stitching over the Xmas - New Years break :) Or to procrastinate from Mystery IX next week after Rhiannon is finished :)

This is absolutely fantastic. Of course, the framing just makes the piece. Gosh I would loooove to do these!!!

Sorry - that's the cover picture from the magazine. My version's not finished yet :)

She's from Mary Hickmott's New Stitches magazine Issue 6. Henry VIII, his six wives, Elizabeth I and Mary Queen of Scots are all charted in the early issues of this magazine.

Ooh, an almost face:)
Great stitching....especially in the heat you have right now.

wow you must be almost done on this!

Have you done any of the others? or are you going to do any of the others?

I have a set of Blackwork ladies through the ages - I would like to do those at some point!

Thanks Hilary - I *am* almost done - I actually wanted to get her finished on the weekend, but the heat got to me ....

She's the first in this series and I do have the charts and fabric set aside for all of them - but I dunno - other charts just take my fancy more these days ... but I do love portraits in historical dress ....

I think this is why I want to get the blackwork ladies done at some point (along with everything else LOL)

Someday, when I have mad money, I would love to collect all of them, myself. In the meantime, I'll just have to live vicariously through you and yours :)

Ok, so someone explain the appeal of blackwork to me, I just don't get it.

She looks great, Mel - now that she's got most of her face :). Claire I can't explain the appeal, but I do like to do a bit of blackwork now and then... I don't have a good "why" though.. as I generally find back stitching annoying!

I like the different patterns that get built up with a decent piece of blackwork!

I personally like the historical significance of blackwork, but I don't have the discipline to do it as it was intended - none of my work is reversible! And I'm a junkie for anything geometric, though I get horribly bored working repeats (like my Long Dog) - love the finished product, if I can just get there!

Hilary Syddall said...

a good piece of blackwork shouldn't have that many repeats!

Melissa Hicks said...

I don't bother making mine reversible these days (the stuff for the SCA I did). I guess I just enjoy the break from doing x's and it has a versatility and texture that's so different from cross stitch. I guess its like a painter who puts down his oil colours and does a few pencil sketches instead ...

Different medium - giving different results.
