Soaping

Evening all, Seeing as my sinus' are still playing up, I can't stitch, can't concentrate enough to read, forget about picking up knitting needles or trying something new, so .....

I made soap.

My usual basic skin-softening recipe, tweaked with the addition of some caster oil for bigger bubbles.  The caster means it will take a lot longer to cure 3-4 months instead of 3-4 weeks - but it is a fabulous bar when cured.

Recipe:
250 gm lard
250 gm tallow
250 gm coconut oil
30 ml caster oil
220 ml rice bran oil
138 gm lye
210 ml water
25 ml Fragrance
touch of gold and chocolate micas

I trialled a new fragrance - Brambleberry's Mayan Gold.  The blurb on the website says:

This luxurious fragrance is a mix of rare woods, spices and amber. It is considered an oriental fragrance with a very unique note: chocolate Our blend contains a large amount of Essential Oils Sandalwood, Patchouli, Clary Sage, Vetiver, Mandarin, Lemon, Grapefruit, Neroli) along with synthetic notes of Vanilla, Chocolate and Musk.

As I can't smell a thing with my sinusitis, I was conservative with the fragrance - so it will be a subtle scent.

I'll take piccies when the soaps come out of the moulds.  Basic moulds today - not fancy ones.  Just wanted a basic simple recipe and procedure to get me back into the swing of things.

Sounds like an impressive mixture of fragrances... Not sure *how* they mix though, but as you're careful I'm sure it's turned out deliciously!

I'm still looking at the bars you made for me - what a shame I can't actually use them because my skin just starts to stick to everything when I'm using soap!!! I'll keep them that much longer though :-)

Good for you. I'm glad you found something you could do even while you aren't feeling well. Would love to know how your soaps come out! The scent sounds heavenly.

The magic word there for me is amber! I bet it will smell fabulous, Mel. I carried your Dragon's Blood soap around in my purse so I could smell it for ages.

Then Teegs - I'd better make up a batch of my infamous Rosewood and Amber soap for your birthday .......

OOh.....in tone of females lusting after Angel...oooh..Rosewood and Amber....

Make that *two* batches curing for October ......

ROFL...well if soap takes 3-4 months to cure.....now's the time!! :)

Melissa Hicks said...

well it depends on the recipe - some only take a few weeks .....

Claire EJ said...

Yeah, you said yesterday some was 3-4 weeks and some 3-4 months...

[Just been online checking the film time...every day at 1.40 except WEDNESDAY, whine]

Go see Shrek or another movie instead .....

Claire EJ said...

Nah, there's a choice between Shrek or FFour Rise of the Silver Surfer. Kids have seen both already in Aus.....

Well, since I do lust after Angel, but Lust after Duncan (Adrian Paul for you, Mel, since he doesn't exist in your Highlander world) consider my Oooh.. said similar to Claire's.

Checking movies Claire? Is the release date for the new Harry Potter movie the same there as it is here? 7/11?

I'm currently getting MI5 from the very beginning courtesy of Netflix.

I'm hoping to see Harry Potter in IMAX, depending on how long it sells out for; we saw 300 that way, and it was the best. Expensive, but worth it, I think. Though, at the rate we're going, we'll have to wait for the DVD - haven't seen Pirates III yet, or Shrek, or, well, nothing since 300. Between the movie & the book - gee, do I see the movie before I read the new book, in case it reminds of a few things I've forgotten? Of course, that's assuming I can keep the book away from Big Kid - he kept OotP for a year before he finished it, because he has 6-7 books going at once. I can't wait, for either!!

Yup...11th July here....

Saw Shrek last night! 6:05pm session and a woman brought four kids under the age of three and spent the entire time with each of them screaming and yelling throughout the entire movie - but she did not leave!

{grumble} They have mums and tots sessions for a reason - and its during the mornings - not when the kiddies should be fed and in bed .... its freezing here by the time the sun goes down at 5pm.

Paul had asked me out to the Wed night cheap sessions so we could do movie and dinner after ..... when we get to the cinema he says "oh its so cold that mum has made soup for us, we can go straight there after the movie"

Needless-to-say we saw the movie, I dropped him at mummies and came home (picking up some drive through on the way) and then had a phone argument with him a couple of hours later just before bed....

But the movie was good - I think I enjoyed it more than Paul. The animation was fantastic - you could see smudges on mirrors and individual stubble of the chins of the main characters - some of the landscapes look almost like real sets ...... utterly amazing what they can do these days!

I liked the story line - a little more straight forward and less obvious references to other fairy tales than Shrek one, but it has none of the glitz I hated about Shrek 2. As I said to Claire last night, my order of preference, is 1, 3 and then lastly 2.

Three has some fantastic scenes, but I wont comment further for fear of spoiling it for those who haven't seen it yet ....

Don't mind admitting I freaked the first time I heard the date, but now I'm thinking that it if I don't have to work, I may figure out a way to get to it. Take my mind off the date by being absorbed by the magic.

The soap sounds lovely, Mel! I really enjoyed the one you sent me, and this sounds like it would be a great and subtle fragrance.

I wish I could come out and go see the movie with you, Teegs! But that week is out for me travelling for sure... my new person is in Nebraska for training that week.

Thanks for the review on Shrek, Mel - we've been pretty much on the fence about whether we'd see that one in the theater or not. Now I think we may go.

J just took me totally by surprise - he wanted to go see the Transformers movie on Saturday evening, but now we're going to see the NY Philharmonic; they're doing "Peter & the Wolf" with Kevin Kline narrating. Should be a good show!

Melissa Hicks said...

Paula - J took me to Transformers to apologise for the Shrek night adventures and it was a much more enjoyable movie than Shrek!

However ...... I'd happily miss all new movies for an entire year, so go and see the NY Philharmonic and Kevin Kline doing Peter and the Wolf {sigh of envy and lust}

That should be excellent and fun too...enjoy and report back :)
