Tales of a Commuting Stitcher: Part the Second

Things I have learned so far:
  • If the weather warms up and you decide to take a lighter jacket, instead of the woollen overcoat, remember to change your scissors to the new jacket.
  • When you are on the train without scissors, make sure you have large blocks of colours so you can use up an entire thread at a time
  • When you start on a different section of the chart to get to big blocks of colour, and you finally get them to intersect with your existing stitching - don't be surprised to find frogs visit.
  • When unpicking the older work because of a case of frogs, don't forget to check that there may be a problem with your newer section of stitching too
  • Be even less surprised to notice that there are mistakes in both sections
  • Glaring at fellow passengers does not help the situation
  • Glaring at fellow passengers does keep the seat next to you free
  • It is an unwritten rule that every train must have a nutter on board
  • Glaring at your fellow passengers because of a case of frogs makes you the nutter
  • Having tails on the back of your stitching (because you do not have scissors to trim them) attracts more frogs as you spend more time avoiding tangles than on correct stitching
  • Contemplating missing your stop and getting off at the next one so as to give you enough time to complete frogging is not a good idea
  • Its even less of a good idea when your stop is actually the end of the line
  • Sometimes its OK to put your stitching down and pick up a book instead

Ah - sound rules here I think Gothy!

I apologize in advance - I just had to laugh! You are having some week, huh? Poor Gothy! You need to hone the nutter glare to work on the frogs! Bad frogs! So, whatcha readin'?

Natalie Mikesell said...

LOL! Yes, always have a good book with you in case of emergency! It is better to read than to be tempted to chuck your WIP out the window ;)

Paula Hubert said...

Especially the window of a relatively fast moving vehicle! :) But I'm glad to hear that I'm not the only one who is armed with both a book and stitching at most times.

Sorry you've been learning more lessons that aren't so much fun, Mel. Just don't expect that nutter glare to work on us!

Claire EJ said...

And what did you learn from Aunty Claire?? ....

To get a Clover Cutter and hang it from your work pass lanyard! No lanyard, no printing, no entry into work etc.

Melissa Hicks said...

Yes auntie Claire!

Will hunt one down over the weekend .... its just that I *just* ordered some threads and fabric from dragonflydreams so I don't want to put an order in again just yet .... oh well - at least I remembered the scissors *this* morning!

Melissa Hicks said...

No need to apologize - I really can see the funny side of it - I was laughing myself stupid as I was typing up that account last night ......

And I was reading The Sanctuary Seeker by Bernard Knight - I love my medieval murder mysteries ....

Claire EJ said...

Didn't we tell you not to order any stash??

Don't worry about the cutter, Aunt Claire has it in hand.

Melissa Hicks said...

I promised not to purchased anything that was on my Lust Lists - my purchases were not on my Lust Lists.

Hugs
Sneaky Mel.

Claire EJ said...

Yeah, very sneaky!!

Hilary Syddall said...

Hmm I think that covers the letter of the law but not the spirit!

What did you order? come on we want details!

Melissa Hicks said...

{Sigh} OK I placed an order with the PTP sale last week:

fat 1/4 Cashel 28, Raisin for FireWing's Amazon Velvet
fat 1/4 Belfast 32, Crystal Fresco For M Design trees Cherish and Believe
fat 1/8 Belfast 32, Crystal Heather For M designs tree Faith
fat 1/8 Belfast 32, Crystal Glacier For M designs tree Rejoice
fat 1/4 Cashel 28, Sterling for Effervescent Designs Operetta (yes the doll pattern)

At Dragonflydreams I ordered the threads, beads and treasures for the four M design trees. Teegs is helping me with the Little Charmers packs for two of these.

Also I won the fabric for Passione Ricamo's Galatea in the Lekker Threads bingo.

That's it - that's *all* my stashing in the past month or so .......

Claire EJ said...

Nice stashing.

Hilary Syddall said...

Hmm some nice stuff there! I will let you off this time :-D

Melissa Hicks said...

Considering *you* have already sent me a birthday gift I should certainly hope so :) :)

Also I wanted to let you know - I already have a use for the mint green fabric you sent - it is the perfect size and colour for Effervescent designs Oooh Look Mama!

So I'm kitting that one up for the train too !!!!!

Also looking at the *huge* wadge of purple fabric you sent to see if it might be used for a Chatelaine design .......

Hilary Syddall said...

Hmm which Chatelaine are you thinking about?

Melissa Hicks said...

I have to check the sizing and do a floss toss but I was seriously considering the Castle Anniversary Sampler ....

Hilary Syddall said...

Hmm not for me I think - but nice all the same!

Claire EJ said...

on PURPLE???? can you hear me screeching al the way down under??

Paula Hubert said...

LOL I suppose that any of us who don't obey a certain Tigger's edict on no bday pressies can't squawk too much about her buying stash, can we? {walks away whistlng innocently}

Melissa Hicks said...

I *did* mention I'd do a floss toss first ......

Actually Polstitches has a 32ct linen handyded called "Heirloom" which might be *just* the thing .... http://www.polstitchesdesigns.co.uk/Fabrics.html

But I'll wait until September before buying anything else .....

Melissa Hicks said...

I didn't buy stash! I kitted up projects for the train - after all Party Cat will be finished in a couple of weeks and you wouldn't want me to go without any further stitching adventures now would you ??? {whine}

And I make no comments about people not obeying edicts. Just remember there's Christmas coming up - I can get you all back then! I already have ideas and processes in place for most of you !!!!!!

Claire EJ said...

Much better choice...anything but purple for a Chatelaine.

Melissa Hicks said...

Why not purple for a chatelaine ??? One of her big ones is done on a pale lavender fabric - can't remember which one right now ....

Claire EJ said...

Yeah....as you said...PALE lavender....I really don't see any of them on a proper purple. I just shudder at the idea even loving purple as much as I do.

Melissa Hicks said...

Ah well - heirloom it is then - next month .....

Claire EJ said...

Just cos I hate the idea of it on purple doesn't mean you have to...midnight blue maybe, but ick, ickety ick for purple LOL

Laura Landis said...

Oh, Mel! I'm looking forward to these commuter updates so much! They're just hysterical!! Sorry you're having such an interesting time on the train!! I missed the whole PTP sale. ::sigh:: Probably for the best since the pocketbook just cannot take it!!

kay jones said...

Sale? what Sale? dont tell me I missed the opportunity for some retail therapy?

kay jones said...

You've gotta be kidding? Are you colourblind? A nice hand dyed stone colour or even a very pale green or blue but PURPLE? YUCK

Claire EJ said...

ROFL and I thought I was the one who screeched. Kay matched me for volume word for word!

Hilary Syddall said...

Ouch - my ears hurt!

Melissa Hicks said...

Bit its such a nice piece of purple fabric and its huge and I want to use it .... {whine}

Claire EJ said...

With the size of your stash, there's bound to be something perfect sitting there calling for the purple fabric..

Melissa Hicks said...

{Mel looks around in panic and whispers} You want me to look in *there*?

You want me to go into the stash room ???? I can't !!!! They all scream "stitch me stitch me !!!!" I can't go in there I tell you - I just can't! It'll send me insane! The men in the white coats will come for me .... ooooh lovely white and then the lovely pink walls .....

{drool with a vacant look}

Claire EJ said...

It's about time.

Melissa Hicks said...

{snort} Thank you so very much !!!!!! Love you too !!

Claire EJ said...

Of course you do.

Michele Anderson said...

You two are hilarious!!! Are you guys sure your not sisters separated at birth? I got some new stash in the mail yesterday too!! I ordered two Uniques off of the Enchanted Fabrics site. One is a light pink opalescent 28 ct. Lugana 18 X 27 and the other one is light greeny blue with mottled tan mixed in. That one is linen 28 ct. 18 X 27 inches too. I also broke down and ordered the entire kit for the newest Passione Ramone mermaid. Not the DMC of course, since I must have at least 3 complete sets in this house if I looked hard enough! But that hasn't come yet!!

Chele

Claire EJ said...

We're both just a little bit nuts. It's fun and makes me giggle.

I love the EF Uniques. I find her fabrics a little stiff to use but adore her colours so much.
Good stashing Miss Chele!

Michele Anderson said...

I think the two of you make us all giggle! My Passione Ramone Gailtia (?) has been shipped! I hope it shows up on Monday and not today so Scott doesn't know I stashed again!! LOL!

Chele

Melissa Hicks said...

{giggle} I used to do that with books - quickly grab them out of the mail and then shove them on the bookshelf. When he asked about I book I would say airily, and lying through my teeth, we bought that year when we visited so and so - don't you remember ???

One of the best things about being single - no-one to criticise my shopping habits :)

Michele Anderson said...

We went to see The Bourne Ultimatum tonight. Scott loved the movie so much that we almost went to see it again after dinner! Instead we went to Barnes and Noble to see how much the 3 book series by Ludlum was. He decided that Amazon would be much cheaper. He gave me his card to use. While I was on Amazon, I ordered Midnight Pleasures, Stroke of Midnight, My Big Fat Supernatural Wedding and Love At First Bite to get the missing Sherrilyn Kenyon stories I don't have. These are group author books so should be fun reading. Oh and I did order Scott his 3 books by Ludlum and the 2 other Bourne books written by another guy after Ludlum died. So should be fun waiting for all these books to show up! My Passione Ramone didn't come today so it should arrive on Monday so I am safe!!! LOL!

Melissa Hicks said...

Ah yes have read My Big Fat Suerpnatural Weddning and Love at First Bite :) :) Really fun reads :)

Michele Anderson said...

Hi,

I made the mistake of going to my book shelf last night - LATE! I wound up being up until 1:15 a.m. because I decided to pick up Sherrilyn Kenyon's Dragonswan book. It is a really small almost leaflet size book so it only took me on hour or so to read it. Haven't read anything since we started the garage/bathroom/craft room stuff. Was a fun little book.

kay jones said...

No, just me and Claire etc. etc. etc. but then thats cos we luv you

Melissa Hicks said...

When have you lot criticised my shopping habits ??????

Hilary Syddall said...

Only when you get something and we haven't LOL

kay jones said...

Exactly. Thanks Hilary. and if we haven't in the past then its time we started. he he

Claire EJ said...

Hey! I have never criticised Gothy's shopping habits. Does this mean I should start? LOL

kay jones said...

Of course. How else would she know that we cared about her

Melissa Hicks said...

You know strangely enough I'm the sort of person who knows people care when they send me positive messages such as virtual hugs, real life phone calls, and little gifties in the mail. Not to mention reacting positively to things I write or let me know when I've amused them or given them a smile for the day.

That's when I know people care .......

kay jones said...

You give me a smile nearly every day, especially with your amusing antidotes. Keep upthe good work you are a tonic (and watch your mail box)

Claire EJ said...

Almost every day!

Melissa Hicks said...

Well I had smiles just reading those responses ....

.... then I checked the mail box! Some of you have vastly different ideas of what constitutes a "little giftie"!

I got a lovely package from Kay that included a lovely stuffed kitty cat and some chocolate, and a stitched bookmark, and some scissors and a fob and a lovely kitted up Kats by Kelly chart.

And from Karen !!!! Well I'm not sure what I've got from Karen - but its a huge box !!!!! I opened it to find a layer of dark purple shredded paper. When I peeked underneath it I could see a layer of bubblewrap and then many individually wrapped presents under that .... so I think I might leave that one until I get home tonight and take pictures as I unwrap each layer .....

I had to open Kay's though - I could feel a plush toy inside the bag and I just *had* to open it !!!!!!!

Mind you - Kay did not include the finished doll pattern she's been stitching up for Elizabeth !!! I was sure she was going to send it to me for a critique before she sent it to Elizabeth {LOL}

Hilary Syddall said...

*snigger* and Elizabeth would have received this - ooooh I don't think so LOL

Congratulations on the gifties - you deserve them sweets! Personally I love gifting people with stuff - don't do it often enough!

Paula Hubert said...

Lovely present from Kay - and Karen's presents are definitely special - have fun!

kay jones said...

Cant believe it got there so soon; only posted it on Friday.

Didn't enclose the model I'm doing for Elizabeth cos it isn't finished yet but I did put a pic of the flosses I'm using on my site. Mind you, your opinion when its stitched will be eagerly awaited.
