I'm alive ......

I'm alive - kinda. So Trubs.

All the stuff arrived - I'm really pissed at the packing - they might have done it faster than me - but definitely *not* better!  I'm really pissed that I had to fork out thousands of dollars for what I consider substandard packing.  I'm definitely letting the removal company know.

Always be wary of removalists that use sub contractors.  You really want (wherever possible) the same people unpacking as packing, that way you *can* say "well you packed it that way - *that's* why its broken/bent etc"

Thanks so much to Claire for keeping everyone updated! THANK YOU !!!!!!!  You guys really *are* my support network so I've been lonely as heck through the past few days.  Been txting my little fingers off just in a subconscious effort to have people to talk to :)

I still have about 10 of the 137 boxes left to unpack.  The biggest headaches were unbolting and moving the sofabed upstairs on my own (it really is a two-person job to hold everything in place to rebolt it together again - not to mention moving those frames upstairs on my own on a twisty staircase).

Also this place is a *lot* smaller than my old place.  It isn't a house, its an upmarket flat/apartment.  Most of my time is being taken up with trying to find creative ways to store everything.  If I had the same amount of storage space as I had at the old place then this would have been done days ago.

I've definitely had to stop and go shopping a few times for more storage units, another bookcase and other odds and sods like power boards, extension cords, a wrench/shifter for the sofa bed etc etc.

Putting the computer together was fun (god I can make some idiot mistakes sometimes) but its up and running - just waiting for the broadband at home now.  After dealing with one ISP that had a good reputation who took nearly three weeks and hadn't managed to actually lodge my application!  I gave up, gave them a large piece of my mind (its never a good sign when the customer says "so *why* would I continue to give you my business?) I changed to another ISP last Thursday.  On Friday they txted me to say the broadband will be connected here Tuesday.  Yay!

Thursday night I gave up, unpacked the Port bottle and the glasses and played Civilisation for the night.  Last night I did the same.

Today is Saturday.  I hung curtains this morning and then went shopping and the hairdressers :)

Tomorrow I will hopefully finish putting everything away and do my weekly house tidy (vacuuming, washing, ironing etc) and then Monday I start my new job.  Tuesday broadband.

Wednesday I will be blogging about not being able to afford food as I wont get paid for another three weeks .....

Its good - really it is - you know me - I'll whinge about everything :) :) :)

Got a txt from Stephen yesterday saying there might be a good job for him in Melbourne available NOW.

I'm not ashamed to say the VERY first thought that went through my head, nay it *screamed* through my head was "I'm not moving !!!!!"

{sigh}  And on that happy giggle I'm signing off ....

I still can't access my email - for some reason the library is blocking my efforts to reach the webmail client - so I will online via email on Tuesday night I hope.

Oh also there are definitely birds in my yard, but different more drab-coloured birds. I'll try and figure out how to put up a hanging feeder when I can afford one and I'll take pictures too.

When I've completely finished the unpacking and got the house int he shape I want it, I'll take pics, or a video on my camera and upload. That will probably be next weekend though - something best to do in daylight.

The place is small - but I really do like it! Lots and lots of wall space - I could frame and hang sooo many completed projects! (Well I could if I could afford the framing and the gain permission for the picture hooks!)

Also Mariann - THANK YOU for the birthday/housewarming gift !!!! I started to read through the instructions but my brain glazed over at the needleweaving part.

I will definitely start this project as soon as I have the brain power - THANK YOU !!!! Oh and I'm already eaten one of the chocolates - twas *extremely* yummy!

For everyone else, for my birthday, Mariann designed and kitted up for my very own "first hardanger project". She included all the threads and fabric. She created the pattern herself and gave me pages amd pages of written explanations, diagrams and instructions for every step along the way!

I am truly honoured!

Good to see you again Gothy (huge hugs to you and Trubs though for what you have been through!) - hmm can you get some money back from the removal firm? sub contractors or not your packing should have been good.

I'm happy that your moved into your new place Mel! I remember the horrors of my own move 3 years ago *shudder* so I can sympathize with what you're going through. Good luck starting your new job! I hope that your first day is fantastic!!!

Great to see you again and to hear you are at least 'somewhat' settled. Is all your 'stash' intact?? (gotta worry about the important stuff first LOL) Hope your first day at work goes well and can't wait to see the piccies!! Cheers

It's a start! Only ten more boxes to unpack sounds like you're mostly set up :-) I'm not astonished that you say the place is smaller. From the photos and your description of the other place it sounded like it would be smaller. But if you like it that's a good start. And should you and Stephen want to move in together, don't forget that you won't be alone anymore and will have four hands to do things! Sounds great that there might be a good job for him in Melbourne as well.

I hope the yummy chocolate gave you some of your strength back, LOL. And I'm *very* relieved that you liked my little project. I hope it works out! Otherwise don't hesitate to bombard me with e-mails.

Hugs!

Well, things sound like they are finally falling into place - yay!!! Only 10 boxes left - that's pretty good!! The ones I left for later ended up going to the dump several years later :) Of course, I need to move again soon, just to have the opportunity to throw stuff out again :)

So... how long does it take you to get to work now?

Great to see you are there and that you are beginning to get sorted.

I received your hugs from Claire today together with an update on your progress, news etc.. Had a fantastic day with her and various other Multiply contacts AND we took pics.

Hope the new job goes fantastically. Hear from you soon

Good luck Monday :) Enjoy that time that you would have been commuting to have an extra cup of tea or sleep in a little!

Glad to see you back online Mel. Sounds like it is all settling well.

Well its Sunday morning here and I just did a dummy run from home into work. Usual walking speed took me 42 minutes.

Now there's no guarantee that I walked the most direct route or that there might be a better way that avoids some of the main roads etc .... but this basically means that to get to my desk at 7:45am (like I used to) I will now leave home at 7am instead of 4:30am !!!!

And I get a good early morning walk in. Otherwise I can catch the tram at 7:45am and still be at my desk before my official starting time of 8:00am!

I'm looking at wherever possible walking in and then catching a tram home. A 45min walk each day is good exercise which wont cost me any money and yet I can still tram it when its raining or far to hot etc etc ...

Sounds like things are going well Mel!! A few odds and ends here not so pretty; but par for the course with that size of a move *talking like I know something about those moves....lol* Enjoy the walking! I walk the kids to school, it's about 1/2 your walk time however; but contains a not so nice hill. Like you said, good exercise and free is a very nice thing!! :)

Mariann Mäder said...

Healthiest way of working out in any case. Apart from the health factor you also get the cost factor of 0$, LOL...

That sounds like a good start for your work, love! If you feel like you'll fit in you've already done half the job.

Paula Hubert said...

Everything sounds good, Mel! It's great to have the option of a good walk to work, or the tram, too! And how will you EVER manage not having to leave the house at 4:30 am? {vbg}

Melissa Hicks said...

I set the alarm for 6:00am this morning so I would leave the house at 7am....

I didn't even get out of bed until 6:30 ...

Luxury I tell you, sheer bloody luxury!

Melissa Hicks said...

All boxes now officially unpacked !!!!

There's crap all over every surface as I figure out where to put things .... but they are out of all of the boxes ....

Melissa Hicks said...

15 mins door to door via tram
42 mins door to door walking

Natalie Mikesell said...

Sounds like you are really settling in :) Enjoy your visit with Stephen!

Karen R said...

That is so awesome!! I can't even imagine walking being an option!! Though I purposely don't live close enough to walk to anything - it'll all get to me eventually....

Tracy H said...

Excellent news (except the packers bit). Congratulations on your arrival and getting things unpacked. I'm sure you'll be able to think of many things to do to replace the lengthy commute. Inquiring minds want to know - how many of the 137 boxes were XS?

Melissa Hicks said...

Four or five boxes of magazines and charts. And the bookcase they are stored on. All of the WIPS, fabric and floss came down in the car with me. I wasn't trusting them or paying the exorbitant insurance for those.

Claire EJ said...

Fantastic...I shall have to adjust my texting hours LOL. I will not be giving you a 4.30 alarm text ever again, too cool.

Melissa Hicks said...

Well you can .... I just probably wont be answering :) Most of the time I'll be leaving the phone downstairs when I go to bed ....

especially if a certain someone gets a job and needs a place to stay shortly ....

Natalie Mikesell said...

oh, yay! When will he find out?

Melissa Hicks said...

Apparently within a week .....

Natalie Mikesell said...

Ohhhh....keep us posted :) BTW, how is the new job going? Been in long enough to get a good "feel" for things?

Melissa Hicks said...

yup - and oh boy! Staffing is good this time - they pretty much know what they are doing and mostly they just roll along and do it - not too many out and out slackers like in the last job.

They've just instituted a new library software package and my job is to train all the new staff up in it and then make both our workflows and the new software talk to each other.

I've already seen areas where we "should" be able to make massive improvements to the workflows. Still a lot of paper-based manual systems being used here - a lot of this stuff "could" be automated - I just need to learn enough of the new software package myself to know how to make it do what I want it to.

Natalie Mikesell said...

Sounds like a great challenge!! And you sound like you are really having fun ;) I am so happy for you!

Melissa Hicks said...

Yeah - its hard learning it all again - but yep - things are going well right now.

I'm definitely happy and definitely looking forward to the next few months.

Even if Stephen doesn't get the job and stays in Perth for a little while longer, I know I'll still have a good life here by myself. I love the area I'm living in, I love my job and I have the house mostly sorted out.

Its supposed to be raining this weekend, so I am looking forward to sitting and stitching and watching the rain for a few hours, maybe with a few DVDs. Bliss!

Natalie Mikesell said...

Is Perth still far away? Or is it closer now ? You deserve a weekend of stitching :) In fact, I was just wishing today that the next season of Torchwood was out. I really miss that show when it is not on :)

Melissa Hicks said...

I think there's still only two seasons out on DVD. And unfortunately I am unsure if there is even a third season in production yet .....

Perth is on the other side of the continent. I've merely moved from the middle of the East Coast to the bottom of the East Coast. Perth is near the bottom of the West Coast.

So still a 5 hours plane trip each way regardless.

However it is closer in that I'm only 20mins from the airport where before I was 2.5 hours from the airport .....

I finally managed to get my hands on a couple of skeins of Crescent Colours Bejeweled again in the mail yesterday - so I should be able to finally finish off the border for BoInk now. I'll focus on BoInk this weekend - well for as long as my eyes hold out anyway :)

Mariann Mäder said...

I haven't felt you this happy for a long while now, Mel! It's great to see you so bubbly again, and I sincerely wish for you that it doesn't wear off for a long, long time!

Melissa Hicks said...

I am very proud of myself. I walked to work this morning *and* home again tonight!

45 mins each way (cause I have to stop longer at intersections)

The other news is that Stephen didn't get the job. He had all the qualifications they were asking for - there was just someone else that had just that touch more ... it happens.

However it did make us look at our relationship and moving in and what we are going to do when he does come back, so short term arrangements are already agreed upon and long term plans discussed. So consider this fair warning by the universe to help us get organised :) :)

Paula Hubert said...

It sounds like this was indeed a good move! I'm glad to hear you enjoying things again! I'm sure the "challenge" at work is a much more enjoyable one than trying to deal with the staff at the last place :).

Melissa Hicks said...

Definitely :)
