There are some immutable laws in the Universe ....

Whenever you go to sew on a button - all the other buttons need sewing too!  Especially if its a new shirt, all the other buttons loosen and start to fall off while you are sewing on the first one.

Never watch a DVD that makes you cry while sewing on buttons.  A black button, on a black shirt, with black cotton, is difficult enough to see in uncertain light.  It is not helped by tears in the eyes.

Bones - Season one - the episode where Angela's boyfriend is killed in the desert.

I am so glad that with all of our technology, we can't get a machine to sew buttons on as well as we can by hand - what's up with that? Even on my "expensive" clothes, I often resew buttons before I even wear them - nothing like losing the only button on your pants the first trip to the bathroom on Monday :( So far, the new season of Bones is pretty awesome :)

I hate sewing buttons!!! Partly because I can never find a regular sewing needle, or see the darn hole to thread it. Erik has a pair of pant with a broken button, I bought a replacement button, but haven't sewn it on yet. It's been sitting here for two weeks. Finally sent him to school wearing the pants with a safety pin helping hold the elastic for his adjustable waist jeans!!! Can we say Slacker Mom?? I've never seen Bones, so I'll just take your word for it being a good show.

Not only are machine sewn buttons usually loose as they can't make a proper knot at the end, they also can't really produce good "necks" (that's what my tailor mum called it when you wrap thread around the sewn part to strengthen the button and give it the little distance from the fabric it should have). Hence the reason why you often need to resew buttons on new clothes.

I don't mind to sew on buttons, my mum really taught me well there - do it almost blindly...

For someone who used to make magnificent medieval creations - entire clothing outfits from the skin out .... I hate sewing on buttons.

99% of my mending pile are buttons or fallen hems ....

I saw the "new" episode on TV last night after I turned the DVD off - somewhere in Season 3 I think .... maybe Season 4 - they were after some cannibalistic ritualistic serial killers ... I suspect this may be an ongoing story arc for the season?

Definitely not a kid-friendly show - its as gruesome as CSI at times with the corpses ...

And uh yeah - we wont mention that the buttons were sewn on with an el cheapo size 26 needle (el cheapo so the end is still somewhat sharp) and two strands of DMC 310 ....

Ohhhh. And here I thought the immutable law of buttons was that when I finally get around to sewing one on (after 3 months on the mending pile) that child, hubby or self will then rip said garment when wearing it for the first time after button replacement. Must be different laws in this hemisphere.

I don't mind "real" sewing either - but mending? {shudder}

Uh - you mean that's not normal?? LOL I can't tell you how many buttons and hems I have that were mended with DMC - since I always seem to have it with me!

Hey, there's no piece of clothing that can't be fixed from a somewhat-decent supply of DMC :) My sewing thread, on the other hand, is mostly relegated to Halloween colors (that costume I made 10 years ago) and Christmas colors - or, colors I don't really wear :)

So I am not the only one who can't figure out how she got a spool of blaze orange thread in her sewing basket? LOL. Yeah, my sewing basket contains bright orange, yellow, sky blue, and grass green. What do I usually have to mend? Hubbys tan or black work pants and Nathan's khaki or camoflage pants. Where are those colors when I need them?

I do have a spool of tan carpet thread that I've been working from most of my adult life - no idea where it originally came from or what I bought it for, or when it will run out - but it kicks ass on buttons when I can use it :) The fabric they're sewn too disintegrates before that button comes loose again!

Well it kinda changes things when I don't have child or hubby - only self :) :)

I'm a mean mom. My boys learned how to sew buttons on in 7th grade home ec. My oldest was so proud of that accomplishment until he found out what it really meant. He stood around dumbfounded for nearly a half hour going but... but, till he realized he really was going to have to sew it on himself.

I don't think Sisu's kids are quite that old .... hubby on the other hand .....
