Another day in the life of a Librarian

Well here I am, bright-eyed and busy-tailed {yeah right} at work early to get it all completed before COB today so I can go on my holiday with a clear conscience.

And the Council computer network is down.  I can't access the library catalogue or any files.  Soooo ......

Actually the situation was the same at Woy Woy yesterday but I assumed that our IT people would have gotten to work this morning and fixed it already .... naive me.

So yesterday afternoon I had three hours of answering questions out of my head with no technological support, not only did I have to know the answer, I had to remember the Dewey number of where it would be found.

Yesterday I answered and found items for such questions as:
* Do you have any books on psychopaths in the workplace?
* My Daughter is doing an art assignment on a painter called Jaberwocky?
* Do you have a book called Huckleberry Pie by Harrison Jones?
* Do you have the latest Di Morrissey book - I don't know what its called?
* My son is doing an assignment on Ancient British beading ....

Answers:
* Yes we had two of them under 158 (psychology) Really!
* Jaberwocky is a poem written by Lewis Carroll in Alice Through the Looking Glass.  We had both the book and a "notes on" book that explained the terms used in the poem. Both in 821.
* Would the book you are looking for be by chance Blackberry Wine by Joanne Harris? Fiction HARR
* Yes but only one copy because the incompetent in acquisitions doesn't know what he's doing so there is a reservation queue.  I'll leave a note for tomorrow to add your name to the queue.
* The Venerable Bede is an Ancient British scholar - is that who you are looking for? 930

It was actually quite exhilarating to think on my feet (and get it right !!!!) for the three hours but boy it was exhausting.  In some ways I have much respect for pre-computerised librarians!

You picked out the Venerable Bede from ancient British beading?? Impressive....I would have just thought of a medieval art or some such thing....wow.

I originally did think that, but then I thought of the age of the child and the school and then clicked that it was a history assignment not a craft one ....

Nate, I don't have that much knowledge in my head - its just that I get asked the same questions and I am pretty good at lateral thinking I guess :)

What a day! It sounds like they managed to keep you busy so your last day before holiday would go more quickly. That's always a bonus in my book! Enjoy your time off and don't get distracted from your STITCHING!!

Well I did work Monday, so today Tuesday is my first day off work ....

I do have plans while I am off. The current plan is:

* spend time each day job hunting.
* Contact two specialist Librarian employment agencies in Sydney, see them and get on their books for work
* Contact the gym today and make an appointment to see them and get familiarized with the equipment again and then go most mornings.
* arrange purchase and installation of a set top box so I can watch some free-to-air channels during a storm :)
* Arrange an Austel approved electrician to come out and change over the phone wires so I can have broadband and phone number on the same line (yes number will change)
* Visit the dentist for checkup and teeth cleaning
* Visit the optometrist and arrange new glasses.

Stuff that is far too difficult to arrange when you work full time and live on your own ......

Stitching plans:
* Finish Tut for mum
* Finish model stitch for Tracy
* Finish Fire Flower
* Put 15 hours in on the RR piece
* Get a chunk done on Faïence
* Get a chunk done on Singularity

and I'll see where I'm at at that point and choose from there .....

Reading plans:

J. D Robb - Origins in Death

Jim Butcher - Death Masks
Jim Butcher - Dead Beat
(I think there's another between these two)

Shaun Tan - The Arrival (I need to re-read this - my new favourite book ever !!!)

There is - Blood Rites. I'm fairly frothing at the mouth for Borders to open in the morning. White Knights is going on sale tomorrow and I rather imagine I'll be sitting in front of Borders, waiting for them to open.

I hope you get everything done you plan. I know my plans never work out quite right...

Well, I'm usually on the Yahoo messenger - found this one the most comfortable one of the ones I tried (ICQ, MSN) - My ID is xstitcher_ch.

I'm still on the MSN messenger, and I should appear visible on both every time I turn on my computer at home, so if you see me, just call :-)

On the other hand, I don't really remember what my ID is on the MSN messenger, so I'd need yours to add to my list...

The time difference is of course an issue, but I'm on quite frequently in the mornings on weekends, which is a good time to see Mel (in her evening), LOL. Then I'm mostly on in the evening local time, which makes it early afternoon for those in the States and late for me means early morning for Mel.

The Yahoo messenger also has a nice additional feature of bringing people into what they call "conference" - which is a private chat room where no one but the invited people can chat. MSN has it, too, but all in all the functions aren't as refined as those in Yahoo.

Very ambitious plans, Mel, and good ones!

I hope you have a lot of success on them all!

Well today while doing a LOT of running around with P for his plans {grrrrr} I did manage to arrange a change of gyms and a reorientation with them tomorrow at 10:30am. I have a dentists visit arranged for next Wednesday and I have someone coming out (when he can fit it on ???) to change my phone lines over.

So its a start. Tomorrow I start the jobs stuff. In other news I got all the blue done on Tut and am back on the metallics ......

Donna Williams said...

If yer a-pokin' me, I'm signed in whenever I'm online. Which, sadly, is probably either too early in the day for you or too late. S'why I say the time diff between Mel and I makes my eyes cross.

Miss Gothy... what name do I wanna use for you on Yahoo? Or MSN either one.. shoot, I even still have AIM, but don't log onto it much.

Paula Hubert said...

Good luck with meeting your goals, Mel! To me, they sound perfectly reasonable :). I use Trillian as well, but I don't have an MSN ID. On Yahoo, I'm peh5321, and feel free to say hello any time I'm signed in. One of my favorite Sunday mornings last fall was whiling away a rainy, damp morning with fresh coffee, some stitching and a great chat with Mariann !

OK my sign in for Yahoo is Cat_Librarian and for MSN its cat_librarian@hotmail.com
