Logistics - yer doin it wrong

The picture on the left is Verdi for my Dad.  Framed it comes in at around 8"x11".  Standard size for a gift.

The picture on the right is Coffin Buzz, a present for Jane.  This comes in at 5 times the size of a normal present.  Now I know I know I went overboard with framing but Jane is a coffee-addicted 18 year old Goth Girl and I deliberately went over the top with the frame and keeping the colours somber.

But this thing is HUGE!  Its 50cm x 63cm.  Or 19.5" x 24".  I took it to Australia Post and their response was to back away with admin speak for "no fucking way".

I think I'm going to need to courier this thing.

Now the framing of this little present did turn out to be one of only two expensive presents I bought this year ... but it just seems to get more expensive every time I think about it.

I think I need to think presents through more in future .....

Oh PS, better pictures are in Finished 2008 folder and are zoomable.

Well, they both came out wonderfully - but yeah, I can see a piece that big needing to be crated - I had no idea the actual stitching finished that big! Gorgeous framing!!

Both pieces are great, and you did a fantastic job on picking the right frames for both. Don't ya just hate the post office though? I spent $50 to mail Christmas cards and two boxes... oh well...

I was truly shocked when I went to the framer to collect these and saw how big it was!

As the framer said: You wanted some black fabric around the writing to show off the hand dyed fabric and then you chose quite a wide frame, so the mat needs to be as wide as the frame and this is what you get.

Mind you the framing for this piece cost as much as the framing for all the other pieces put together - but god it looks good.

Of course it looks sooo much better in real life - I adore the framing.

Mr Bears may be coming to the rescue with a courier for me. He;ll let me know if the ones he has used before will collect and send to that area.

As for the Post Office - I am *dead* if Claire sees the postage costs I spent on her parcel ......

It looks stunning but I can understand the Post Office's reaction!!

They both turned out great, Mel! Of course the big one is quite big, but I'm really astonished that your post office wouldn't send it! I mean, isn't mailing things their job? They should be jumping on every customer who is willing to send by mail rather than courier! No business sense at all in some places!

I went picking frames today :-) But I'll frame the pictures myself and with everyone I'm framing I'll get better! I actually look forward to doing this again. This time both frames came in under 100 CHF, which is good.

Errr HELLOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!
Brain....calling the Gothy brain......

Alison is coming to stay for Christmas, can't she just take Jane's gift home with her??
Jane is after all, her daughter, and they do live in the same house together.....ermmmm is it me, or am I nuts LOL.

The postage on your gift this year, Mel, cost 6 times less than last year's two gifts put together LOL....when it arrives, it has instructions for opening...be sure to open it only on the side which says "top"..or else!

Claire EJ said...

Seeing that I have need of a Minion at times, you won't be that "dead" LOL.
I was sure though that my little Sisu Angel was my Xmas gift from you, honey!
Your gift was mailed today...along with all the other ones I had to send.

Just looking at the weather pixie on here...yours reads 12c and Stephen's reads 23..talk about opposite sides of a continent.

Great finishes Mel! The framing for both looks really wonderful!!

It does look great Tigger! The framing is perfect for it!
And my DH grumbled at the $20 I spent sending out 8 Christmas goodies. I thought that was pretty reasonable per parcel.

Framing turns out cheaper if you just buy the frame and mount and do the lacing yourself and as Claire says, cant you send Janes back with Alison.

As for your Dads - make him come and collect it:))

Unfortunately no. Alison is flying down instead of driving and she is only taking carry-on, no stored luggage. She's already posted gifts down here because they wont fit in her backpack.

Knowing the airline she is flying with, and the fact she is flying ion Christmas Eve I heartily endorse her decision for carry-on only. That way when flights ore canceled, she gets moved onto another flight quicker than those who have luggage to move :)

Yes mum :)

Aaaagh !!!!!!!!!

Stephen and Alison *and* Dad all here at the same time =- crowded into my little apartment ?????

Ooooh I can feel more of my hair turning white .....

Melissa Hicks said...

Seriously, yes Jane's framing cost more than all the other framing put together - but having said that, this framer charges very reasonable rate ... I was quite impressed at how little this cost compared tot he "other" framer that I went to for mum's birthday present ....

Claire EJ said...

Would they even get on? and don't forget, Dad would have to bring Moose too...eep!

Shame about the carry-on only ....will have to be couriered then...

Hair dye love...hair dye...

Melissa Hicks said...

Seriously overdue! Hopefully I can afford it next pay - but probably not until after Christmas :(

They both look lovely in their frames. And as everyone else has said - I had no idea the coffee one was quite so big. It *is* ther perfect framing job, tho!

Laura Landis said...

Nice framing! The frame/mat choices really add to the projects.

Melissa Hicks said...

Yep - and I think I've finally found a cost-effective way of getting it to her. Will find out for sure later this morning.

Karen R said...

Oh, that's good to hear!

Claire EJ said...

And......

Melissa Hicks said...

And I'm about to run off right this minute and find out- will let you know as soon as I get to work and the crises and meetings have settled down :)

Melissa Hicks said...

OK at my desk - supervisor called in sick so meeting went really fast :)

Posted at good old Australia Post for $11.50.

Posted as just a regular parcel so cross fingers I used enough cardboard and bubblewrap ....

Claire EJ said...

Glass or plexiglass [the fake stuff]....I'm sure it will arrive just fine.

Melissa Hicks said...

Glass.

I put layers of cardboard over the glass. Then I wrapped the frame in layers of bubblewrap and then I wrapped the whole thing in more layers of bubblewrap. Then I wrapped it in actual wrapping paper and finally in heavy duty brown paper and LOTS of sticky tape.

Unless they do something really stupid like literally throwing it around or placing a really heavy box on top if it - it will arrive safely.

Claire EJ said...

Forty flipping dollars fifty!!!!!!

Outrageous....thie gift had better be worth it LOL.
I would love to open it now but we won't have much to open here Christmas morning so it will be lovely to have a special gift waiting for me.

Sisu Lull said...

Shee-it! Did she mail you house?

Melissa Hicks said...

Its actually quite small. Its just that anything under 500gms overseas is $20. Anything 500gms to 1 kg is $40.

That's the main reason why no-one else got gifts posted to them from Australia this year.

Claire EJ said...

So now I feel guilty....sighs....

Melissa Hicks said...

Don't be stupid!

I had planned this gift for you for months. You should laugh when you see what it is - and that will mitigate any residual guilt ;)

Sisu Lull said...

Ahem....(tapping foot), not guilty dear, special. So what if Mel decided she had the perfect gift for you? It isn't anything to feel guilty about. Besides, now we all get to wait with anticipation for Christmas to see what she got you! Think of as an entertainment expense!

Melissa Hicks said...

Exactly! What she sed !!!!!!
