Of No Fixed Abode .......

Well I'm at mum's now.

Old house is done and dusted, work is finished, I've said goodbye to friends and I drove to mum's this morning with a rather full car.

Mum is happy to see me - Trubs is quite in her element showing proper levels of disdain .....  Everything is as it should be .... :)

My furniture wont be delivered to the new place until Friday next week or even Monday the week after (God I hope it is Friday !!!) So I'll be at mum's place for around a week.

Might even get some stitching in .....

Bye all

I'm shutting down and packing the home computer for the move.

Catch you all when I reach the dark side (I've been reliably informed they do indeed have cookies).

Mum

In other news my Mother!  Yes Denise!

Mum hurt herself last Friday - put her back out.  Let me know on Saturday than it was fine and she would visit the Chemist for some extra painkillers but it would fix itself.

Last night after Stephen was on his way home I rang mum to find out she hadn't been able to sit for the entire weekend because if she did she wouldn't be able to stand up again.  She had a neighbour come in every morning and evening to set her fire and keep feeding wood into it for her to keep her house warm!

Why did mum not tell me this?  Because she's a mother!  She knew I would have gone haring off down the 4 hour drive and spent the weekend with her (Stephen would have been dragged along too) and *she* wanted me to spend my time working on my own issues and spending time with Stephen.

Mothers!  This is such classic mother behaviour!

She managed to obtain an emergency slot in the chiropractors scheduled last night and she's got another visit scheduled on Thursday and she if off work for the rest of the week.

I'll be heading down that way as soon as I can - probably Saturday or Sunday and spending a few days before heading on to Melbourne.

Sickening Post - feel free to delete

Oh god I'm so in love its sickening!  I'm still sitting here with a goofy smile on my face.  At 5am in the morning!

Maybe the post-sex endorphins are still swimming around my system ..... yup that's the answer!

You know when you are feeling down or everything is getting on top of you and you just wish someone would give you a hug and tell you everything will be alright ....

Well I've learnt over the years that no matter how much I wish for it, it never happens.  I get lots of virtual hugs and long distance support from you guys (which is one of the reasons I blather about so much in this blog - you guys *are* my support mechanism) and of course my mum and Alison help as much as they can - but I learned never to expect it from my partners.

I didn't even hope for anything last weekend - I knew if Stephen didn;t visit for my birthday then he wouldn't be visiting at all for a while ....

I was wrong.  He visited when I needed the visit.

Fabulous Weekend

My fabulous weekend has come to a close ....

Stephen who so wonderfully unexpectedly turned up at work on Friday is now on the train back to Sydney to get a flight back to Perth.

I know I am loved and I know I can get through the rest of this move.

I am aware that I should not require external validation of my self worth - but sometimes it just helps.  Stephen and Alison met over the course of the weekend and both seem to get along very well.  In fact Stephen met all of my Gosford friends and seemed to get along with all of them.

Both Stephen and Alison helped me a little bit with the packing and cleaning out of the shed and fridge and Stephen helped me sort out some cupboards about what to take and what not to.

But mainly he just helped me de-stress.  Lots of cuddles and brunch and we went to the movies twice.

I still have a lot to do before Thursday but I now feel like I will actually be able to get it all done.

And it appears that, if he can swing the leave, Stephen will be spending Christmas with me in Melbourne .... {silly happy grin}

No stitching update this week .....

This too shall pass

For a variety of reasons I've spent most of today at home crying ...

This too shall pass ....

Right one last time

One last attempt at this and then I'm giving up ......

Well things are coming together ... well more to the point I think I've arranged everything I *can* arrange at this point in time.

  • Trubs is down with mum now.
  • Car is roadworthy and ready to go.
  • I have all the guff to do my taxes and they will be done and paid for before I go.
  • I have everything I need (birth certificate, proof of quals etc) for the new job.
  • I have a place to move to and have paid first four weeks rent. Bond will be paid Saturday.
  • I have arranged telephone and amenities to be connected to the new place.
  • I have arranged house cleaner and carpet cleaner for the old place after I'm gone.
  • I have somewhere to sleep for the few days after furniture is collected before I finish work.
  • I am waiting to see which removalist has been selected and how much I have to pay.
  • I am waiting on the collection/delivery dates to be confirmed.
  • I will then arrange disconnection of phone and amenities to old place.
  • I still need to actually pay all these above services.
  • I still need to finish tidying the contents of my house and deciding what to take and getting rid of the items I'm not.
My birthday was a bit of a fizzer due to the Fri-Mon being taken up with a lot of the above stuff.  But that was expected.  My mum came to visit which was great.  A lot of things are so much easier when you have a second person around to give a hand, or even venture an opinion.  Mum is great for that!  She went home yesterday for a rest I think.

One other lovely present I *did* receive was an external hard-drive from .  He pre-loaded it with most of my favourite music and still has enough space left over that I can backup the entire contents on my PC before the move too.  Such a thoughtful lovely gift and not something I would have considered doing myself.

OK lunch is over - back to the grindstone .....

Domesticity

Pics taken of mum and Trubs.

As we are moving, I decided it was finally time to get Trubs a tag in case anything happens.  The two pics are Trubs in her new finery and her friendship with mum ....

Hope everyone else has happy domestics pics at times .....

Lothario Update

For Claire from Alison:

Some background - Bandit (Alison's other cat) has long hair so Alison feeds her Hairball kibble/bikkies.  The hairball kibble has a higher percentage of oils in them and Lothario has been gorging himself on them alone, and not touching his own diet kibble.  Alsion had been mixing the two and Lothario had been picking out the Hairball to eat and not touching his own Diet Kibble.  So yesterday, instead of mixing the two sets of kibble, Alsion has started to feed them separately - Lothario now *only* gets Diet kibble.

Hmmm owed?  Since when are hugs owed ????

Lothario?? Well he’s a bit of a bastard, smooched beautifully on my lap before latching onto my hand with his teeth.  So I grabbed him by the scruff of his neck, he bit harder, I grabbed harder, he let go & I dropped him onto the floor with little gentleness.

Jane does call him evil …. He’s on a diet now, still can’t believe he’s only 600g heavier than Bandit. He’s not hugely impressed, but after 24 hours decided he would eat the bickies offered. He still snaffles Bandit’s bickies if he can, so a sharp eye is kept on him whilst bickies remain in Bandit’s bowl. He has settled down somewhat re Bandit, the need to fight with her has reduced, so the scuffles now & again rather than on sight every time.

He still hasn’t worked out how to play with my younger dog, Lothario’s 6kg & Charlies 25kg still seems a problem. Mind they are highly entertaining to watch, the cat swipes the dog’s wagging tail & gets nosed big time (tipped over a number of times!) for his trouble! How Charlie hasn’t worn a number of significant scratches on his nose or face courtesy of the cat I will never know.

Lothario’s  redeeming features remain his sheer entertainment value, his liking for my lap & a most magnificent purr!! Claire I will claim your hug from Mel as well as what is owed most happily!

Updates

Well car is roadworthy and all registrations and insurances completely paid and receipted now.

Home PC seems to be going fine again after its little tantrum last week.

Early this morning I faxed in an application for the rental accomodation the I really want.  Please keeps everything crossed for me.

Today I have received the official paperwork from RMIT.  All appears to be exactly as discussed and I have put in my official resignation from UNSW.

Off to arrange some breakfast now.

Updated half hour later:  My Director has announced my resignation to the whole Library.  Seems weird to get "congratulations" and "well done" when I am still going to be here another 2 and a half weeks.

I will point out that for most of my pre-University life we only had two TV channels so you watched what was on - regardless of preference ....  and some of these shows I have *only* seen four or five episodes.   Many of the other Cringe-worthy ones were watched at University ... I think.  I remember we made drinking games out of 90210 and Melrose Place ....

Birthdays

I feel presumptuous and silly about saying this - but honestly anyone who is going to send me a present and has not yet done so, please keep hold of it and send to the new address when I get one.

I finish at the Uni on Friday 29 August and all mail received after that will go into limbo at this stage.  Hopefully I'll have a new address shortly and you can send mail to that .....

If I don't, and I have to go into temporary accommodation I will get my mail redirected to mums.

Please keep your fingers crossed for today and the next couple of days that I get the house I really want .....

Women's Road Cycling

Was good to stitch to this afternoon.

Here's the progress I made today on Wizard's Inkwell.

Good night all.....

Mel's Sunday Update

Oh what a week - a week of irritations with a couple of good endings.

No major news this week, no deaths, no births, no major upheavals .... just a few small panic attacks...

As can be seen my computer is working again !!!!  Yay !!!!!!  My mum, Denise, my own personal Help Desk Support Department, walked me through some diagnostics over the phone and we cleaned out the Registry and did a defrag and all those other housekeeping things you are supposed to do on a regular basis and the computer now seems to be working fine again.  Took me three days but it all seems OK.  So no need to panic over lost data or buy a new PC.  This is good because ....

I spent the week panicking about my car - yearly registration is due next Wednesday and I couldn't find all the paperwork.  By yesterday I filled in all the paperwork, paid for the compulsory insurance and took the car in to be inspected.

Two tyres, two sets of wiper blades, 4 hours and hundreds of dollars later the car is deemed roadworthy for another twelve months and is all re-registered.  I also paid my Roadside Service annual membership so although I know the car is roadworthy I can still get assistance if anything goes wrong on the drive to Melbourne in a few weeks time.

I know for certain what relocation assistance RMIT University are offering (none - my new job is not fancy enough to qualify) but the Library is scraping together $2000 and the equivalent of an economy plane fare for me.  So that was really nice!

I still don't have a place to move to, but Stephen has arranged a friend to turn up to an inspection for my tomorrow afternoon.  (At least I hope he has - better ring and check).  Please cross fingers for me!  This is the place I really want - even though it is more expensive than I was hoping to pay.  I admit it, I've fallen in love with the pictures of the bathroom and the dishwasher :)

Other news, the removalist company is turning up next Friday to give me a quote and an ETA on when they can do it.  Hopefully by then, I might have been approved for the new place?  Otherwise I'll keep looking and keep pestering friends to attend inspections for me.  If I don't get this place, I'll probably look further North which is cheaper but will definitely require transport to work again .... still 20 mins on a tram or bus is nothing to worry about - especially compared to what I'm doing now.

Work was really really stressful this week - I had to write a ton of statistical reports on staff productivity - did you know Excel spreadsheets can make your brains leak out your ears ....  I also mentally psyched myself up for a round of staff performance and appraisal meetings.  I wrote up all the paperwork and presented it to Library Management last Friday.  They've now decided I don't need to hold these meetings with staff next week.  Its all been put off until after I leave.  I'm as confused as Hell!  Obviously politics at play somewhere above my head.  But hey, its 13 horrible meetings I no longer have to run!

So work wise I'm pretty much done now, just the usual day to day stuff and a few tweaks tot he statistical reports (pie charts instead of bar charts etc) and I'm on the downward run now.

So that's my week - got more little things organised.  Still waiting on big things like removalists quotes and  applications for new homes but got lots of small stresses out of the way.

Yesterday afternoon after I got home with car, I really wanted to de-stress and my eyes weren't hurting for the first time since Monday, so I did some stitching on Wizard's Inkwell while the Olympics were on in the background.  I got a bit done and I kinda understand more of the instructions on this now.  I will definitely come undone at the actual hardanger sections but I will do what I can and then scream for help from there.

I did the dark green diamond late last night and actually misplaced it, so I frogged and redid it before crawling off to bed.  Hope you can't see the unpicking too badly.

Mariann - the green one is supposed to be "Kloster blocks".  Just looks like blocks of satin stitch to me.  Did I do this right?  Please let me know!

I spent the morning out with a group of friends that are current and ex Gosford Library staff so that was a long and leisurely brunch.  Now I think I might just ignore the world and stitch some more for the afternoon.  I know I need to pack and declutter and clean the house but frankly I think I just need some time out.  My sanity got a little bit frazzled this week.  So I'm off to stitch with the Olympics in the background again - hopefully there will be Men's Gymnastics on today

Stressed

{insert long string of unimaginative repetitive expletives here}

I've spoken on the phone to a dozen (an even 12) Real Estate companies in Melbourne.  Not one of them will accept an application to rent a property until after *I* view that property in person.

The fact that I am interstate and cannot run down the street at the exact time of their choosing appears irrelevant.  Of the four places that were high on my list, one is open this after from 2:00pm until 2:20pm.  Another is open tomorrow from 11:00am until 11:20am. A third will probably be open for viewing next Monday at some point and who knows about the fourth.

RMIT University are not offering a thing towards temporary accommodation or storage costs.  All they are offering is about half of the actual moving furniture costs and the cost of an economy plane fare.

To be fair, they don't actually have to offer me a thing - so $2000 and a plane fare is nothing to sneeze at.

But this is becoming a lot harder than I expected and I'm feeling a mite stressed.

At this point it now looks like I get the Removals Company to pick up my stuff and shove it in storage.  I then drive to Melbourne and stay with a friend while do all the required viewing of houses and then put in my applications.  Then I contact said company again to get my stuff *out* of storage and into the new house.

And still start a new job within a fortnight .....

Feeling close to crying with stress right now .... I am sure the feeling will pass ...

Yes all the Aussies can now say "I told you so"!

Mel's Sunday Update

Yes Don't fall over in a faint - I know I haven't posted a Sunday update in quite a while .....

While I was in Perth last month, I started Wizard's Inkwell.  Thank you so much to Paula for the suggestion - this looks like a fun project and the colours so far seem to be working well.  I am waiting on some Kreinik braid to arrive before I move onto the next part of this one.

Also while I was in Perth, I started some of the masses of back stitching required for Jasper.  Two side of the frame have been fully back stitched.  the other two sides are barely started and the actual middle is barely started. I worked on this for about 15 hours ......

Finally this week I gritted my teeth, swore at my eyesight and did BoInk Part 7.  I loved this part - I love Celtic Swirls .....  This part's photo was taken outside so the colouring is quite different from previous photographs.  The dark blue stands out so much more but the green looks muted and washed out ....

Anyway - that's my progress.  Hope everyone else had a good week this week.

What a Birthday Present....

Some guy over on LJ arranged THIS for his girlfriend's birthday ....

I am truly gobsmacked - what an awesome present!

Some of the components are a little creepy - but that just shows how true to form it is for what it is intending to be .....

Its my birthday in a fortnight's time - somehow I don't think I'd be expecting anything like this {grin}

Though I would consider commissioning the artist for a Jules Verne version if I had any money to spare ....  methinks however, this was done as a labour of love for the lady in question.

EDITED:  I was wrong.  I looks like a straight commissioned piece.  Here's the artists' site in question http://alexcf.com/   Pardon me while I drool ....

My Eyes

Finally got to see the optometry and ophthalmology people yesterday.  We are actually the highest prestige teaching institution of these in Australia so the Campus has a free clinic as long as you allow the students to use your case for assignments etc.  They are well supervised.

First the good news:  my eyesight is the same as it has been for the last few years.  My eyeglasses prescription requires no major changes.  I also do not have glaucoma, cataracts or any damage to my cornea.

I am extremely short sighted and apparently have been preferring my prescription to be slightly too strong.  I do prefer to see with crystal clarity and thus have been overtaxing my eyes instead of accepting a slightly fuzzier outlook on the world.  But this is a minor issue.

I also got roused on by the supervisor because I don't blink enough.  Apparently my eyes are very dry and I need to blink more.  When I read a book I am supposed to blink my eyes every time I turn a page.  I smiled and said that when I'm in a good book, I don;t notice the turning of the pages, I don;t even notice the words on the page.  I tune out the physical world and exist in the movie in my head .....

The supervisor turned to the student and said - so how will she know to blink more often if she tunes out the physical world?  The student suggested a buzzer to remind me.  I frowned and the supervisor set the student an assignment to report back to her next week with a solution to the problem.   The emphasis was on the word solution - so I think she was making a pun ....

I'm buying more eye drops on payday ....

Anyway it turns out the real issue is that the macula in my right eye is swollen.  The macula is apparently responsible for fine tuning and focusing eyesight.  And after a few hours mine just shuts down and says "nope - done enough work today".

They definitely think this is a hang-over from the eye infection I had a month or so ago.  Apparently this is common and often heals itself.  So I have an appointment in three and a half weeks (well they wanted four but you know ....) and I will go through the three hour barrage of tests again.  If it has not settled down then I will be referred to an appropriate specialist.

This all makes sense - my eyes refuse to focus as the day goes on, and it gets harder as the week goes along.

Generally it is better on the weekends ....

So that's why I haven't stitched since I returned from Perth ..... {blush of embarrassment}

Squee - Next Installment

I verbally accepted the job offer from RMIT.

I had an in-depth talk with Barbara, my new supervisor and all the conditions and arrangements appear to be to my liking.  She is investigating what component of relocation she can offer me and I expect an email from her or her HR department early next week.

So, based on the written offer coming through and being the same as the verbal offer .....

I finish work at UNSW COB Friday 29 August (4 weeks).

I move the middle of the following week and then give myself 10 days to get settled, get the net up and running, get unpacked etc

I start my new job Monday morning 15 September 2008.

Now - next stage - to find a domicile to move to :)
