Stressed

{insert long string of unimaginative repetitive expletives here}

I've spoken on the phone to a dozen (an even 12) Real Estate companies in Melbourne.  Not one of them will accept an application to rent a property until after *I* view that property in person.

The fact that I am interstate and cannot run down the street at the exact time of their choosing appears irrelevant.  Of the four places that were high on my list, one is open this after from 2:00pm until 2:20pm.  Another is open tomorrow from 11:00am until 11:20am. A third will probably be open for viewing next Monday at some point and who knows about the fourth.

RMIT University are not offering a thing towards temporary accommodation or storage costs.  All they are offering is about half of the actual moving furniture costs and the cost of an economy plane fare.

To be fair, they don't actually have to offer me a thing - so $2000 and a plane fare is nothing to sneeze at.

But this is becoming a lot harder than I expected and I'm feeling a mite stressed.

At this point it now looks like I get the Removals Company to pick up my stuff and shove it in storage.  I then drive to Melbourne and stay with a friend while do all the required viewing of houses and then put in my applications.  Then I contact said company again to get my stuff *out* of storage and into the new house.

And still start a new job within a fortnight .....

Feeling close to crying with stress right now .... I am sure the feeling will pass ...

Yes all the Aussies can now say "I told you so"!

Oh hugs! That sounds stressful indeed.

Another month of stress outside of work - two weeks to settle in is only helpful if you get something quickly :-( Otherwise it will be more like two days!

Glad you have a friend who gives you shelter.

On the other hand I do have some understanding for those real estate agents: only if you view the property before renting can you point out possible problems immediately. But I suppose you do have a delay for any list of problems with a property, don't you?

I think here you can hand in your list of things to repair (or just problems you find that have been there so that they can't hang them on you when you move out) within three month, possibly more if you bought the property and quite a lot longer if the property was new when you bought it.

Mel, I am sure you will be able to work it out! Hugs and calming thoughts coming your way. BTW, is it too far of a drive to go out on a Friday evening and return home on a Sunday...seeing any available apartments on a Saturday?

Viewing times are during the week for a 20 minute window. Melbourne is a 14 hour drive from here. One way.

My computer is now dying too - it has taken me an hour and a half to get it to work enough to get this message out.

I'm going to bed. Maybe this is all a nightmare.

Oh sweetheart....Dammit that I'm too far away to help.
Bed seems like a good idea. Will be thinking of you and sending a gazillion good vibes out to you.

Wow! I second what Claire said and hope you get a good night's sleep.

Wishing you nothing but the best Mel. I hope things go smoothly for you.

I guess with the cost of getting there, it's not worth going back for a couple of days in order to find something? Otherwise, you'll have to just get your head around a storage unit for a couple of weeks until you've had a chance to scope around. Luckily you have a friend to bunk with temporarily and not the additional cost of a hotel room. Hang in there - you'll be moved and settled in in not time!! Look at it as an adventure - that helps. Hugs to you, Trish

I hope some rest helped! I can't imagine NOT being stressed with all of this. Sending all sorts of good vibes your way!

Let me wax eloquent eloquent and say.........Crap. Sorry, wish things were working out better.
Just try to de-stress and concentrate on the positives. Nothing I can say is going to make it any better, but I have flown and driven across country for jobs before, and it is stressful, but always works out in the end. I lived in my car for a month too, but I don't recommend it, LOL.

Wow - I'm sorry this is such a headache for you; are they just not used to someone outside the city looking for a place in advance?? Well, having moved cross-country and cross-Atlantic a "couple" of times, it's a huge PITA, but once it's done, the pain fades pretty quickly!! Hang in there - it will be worth all the trouble!!! And I hope your computer just needed a little rest, maybe a good defrag, and be back in action!!!

Oh mel - you got the new job?? I must have missed that post somewhere!!!

Sorry its turning out a nightmare BUT I'm sure things will get better. At least they are offering some money towards relocation and you do have someone to bunk down with. Get some sleep and I'm sure things will be clearer when you stop and think them out.

Positive vibes coming across the big blue sea

I have had a night full of strange dreams (some involving matters of the heart but in a non-sexual manner). This morning it took me 45 mins to coax my computer up and then 2 minutes later it turned itself off.

Spoke to ex-workmate Alison who knows more of the local area IT boys and the people she recommended are only open Mon-Fri so I might have to limp along doing things at work only until next Friday.

Claire EJ said...

Yikes, thank goodness we have text for the weekend! Would miss you so much otherwise.

Ok have more information. Apparently it is actually *illegal* for RE agents to rent to someone who hasn't inspected the property.

Stephen has suggested that I find a broker to do the leg work for me. I will look into this today over lunch. It will probably be more expensive, but more useful in the long run.

I have also had offers of couches and sofa lounges for a few weeks too if need be.

So it is stressful but we are getting there....

Claire EJ said...

At least you understand the situation more now...annoying but best to be legal if possible...
Glad you have the offers of places to sleep for a while....
More big hugs being sent your way.

[Out all day tomorrow but will be around on text as always]

Melissa Hicks said...

Many many hugs to you and all your health issues too honey !!!!!

I know not to always expect a response via txt but remember I'm now off twitter for a week or so.

Claire EJ said...

Still no Twitter on your phone? sighs...

Melissa Hicks said...

My phone is very basic .... sorry. Maybe I should talk to Mr N T Bears about borrowing his spare Blackberry. He has offered it to me a couple of times ....

I am guessing you got the job you wanted in Melbourne? Congratulations!!!!! I hope all goes well with your move. I am thinking of you

Glad things are shaping up for the move. I keep meaning to ask Lyn if her son could help. He lives out near Dandenong and has just been off sick to see if he could help you out with viewings etc. I'll grab her for a talk tomorrow at some point.

Carolyn Ford said...

Sorry to hear things are so complicated and difficult with the move, sending good thoughts your way.
As someone said above, hopefully any pain with the process will be over quickly and then a distant memory by Christmas!
Good luck!

Donna Williams said...

okay, I skipped ahead and know you have your computer working again, but I sure do hope the rest of it works out for you! Sounds as if moving over there is way more complicated here. Here it's basically first/last months rent, pet deposit and you are in, whether you've actually seen the place or not. Or it is in my part of the country. I just have faith that every thing will work out fine in the long run. You seem to be one of those people that could fall into ...ahem.... and come out smelling of roses. But I'll definately be thinking good thoughts for you.

Melissa Hicks said...

No darling - I still smell of ahem - I just convince people that all roses smell like that :) :)

Thanks - I am *sure* it will all work out - it would just be nice if we were at that point now :)

Hey, Dearheart, how much does your computer Goddess know about Macs? I got the receiving part of emails figured out, but when I open them, they are blank. ARGH!!!!!!
