A different sort of Christmas present ....

Had a long frustrating phone call with mum today - don't get me wrong I love my mum - but neither of us could think of a Christmas present for her that she really wants - thats not just me buying something for her simply so I can say I've done so. Some useless piece of junk she'll feel guilty about wanting to offload ....

Then I came home to the following in my mailbox http://www.abc.net.au/science/features/greenxmas/

So for Christmas this year mum is getting an adoption of an animal in the Victoria zoo. Here's their adopt an animal page, http://www.awhc.zoo.org.au/Get%20Involved/Adopt%20an%20Animal.aspx

and here's a list of the animals you can choose from ..... http://www.zoo.org.au/sponsorship/animaladoptlist.htm

Cute huh ??

Very cute! Mum has adopted a Little Owl for me called Snapdragon as one of my gifts for Christmas :)

That's a lovely idea. I'm so glad we don't celebrate Christmas now - saves all the worry of what to buy someone who really doesn't need anything.

Great idea, Mel! I have a couple of people that something like this might be an option for once in a while, also!

OOh, I just had a good look at the list of animals....they have the Fishing Cat!!!! We saw one for the first time last year. They are just the most adorable little snarly prowling cat with hayuge paws......Very bouncy and full of character, a real Goth Tigger!!!! Full of attitude!

Actually I was very very tempted to get mum a Serval - they are the Egyptian cats - and I know mum adores anything to do with ancient egypt, but then I thought of the Meerkats and {sigh}

So I sent the list to mum and intimated that they were cross stitch patterns or soap moulds and could select 3 or 4 designs for me to choose from please :)

Soap Moulds!!! OMG...if there were a Meerkat soap mould, my Mother would adore it LOL.

Haven't seen one of those yet - but I'll keep my eyes out .....

Welllll ..... I've already got your Christmas present - but there's always Birthday and Christmas next year .... so if you want to look through the list and choose 4 or 5 different animals or plants, I could always keep it in the back of my mind for future .....

Yeah my Dad wouldn't get it either I'm afraid ... but mum will love it !!!!

hmmm - could you not make a soap mould by painting a rubber solution over a small statue of a Meerkat? or do soap moulds have to be solid?

Melissa Hicks said...

Hilary, rubber works for candles. I have seen something done for soap with paint on latex. It was a squirrel ornament that he painted with silicon, let it set, filled it with fresh soap, pr5essed the two halves together - and voila.

ah! Here's Terry's site: http://home.exetel.com.au/lozniz/Soap/index.htm
and specifically - the latex squirrel :) http://home.exetel.com.au/lozniz/Soap/LatexMoulds.htm

Hmm - Claire, Tez only lives an hour's drive away from me, if you had a favourite Meerkat ornament, I could take it to Tez and get him to make me a mould from it ....
